Memorial Day Weekend

Remember when I said weekends were my jam?  Well, weekend ain’t got nothing on my new friend 4 DAY WEEKEND! I am in Heaven with all the family time we are getting.  With Stefan’s current training schedule, we don’t get too much time with him.  We love every minute he gets to put his books down and read books with us, or build towers (even if they never seem to meet Nora’s expectations … She is a picky kid when it comes to imagination play.) My Mom always tells me that I have such a hands-on husband and because of that it is so hard for me when he’s away from home.  I completely agree with her. I couldn’t be more grateful for my hands-on hubby and all of his help and support at home – even when he is fighting bigger battles at work.  This weekend was just what we needed after the past two years of (on and off) training and stress.

We spent several hours at the beach. I must say living on the beach has it’s perks.  Although, from the looks of my skin you would have no idea that we lived anywhere near the beach.  My kids on the other hand .. they got their Daddy’s skin.  Lucky little ladies.

On Saturday we visited Fort Pickens, a historic United States military fort on Santa Rosa Island.  The fort was so fun to explore.  I love that the girls are getting older and able to (kind of) enjoy these activities.  Nora was so excited to see the “pirate cannons” .  Just like the ones from Pirates of the Carribean at Disneyland .. her favorite ride by the way. She was thoroughly disappointed that there wasn’t a pirate ship there so we decided to eat dinner at Peg Leg Pete’s – a restaurant on the beach that had plenty pirate flags and doubloons to satisfy the cravings of our little buccaneers.

On Monday our  neighborhood had a block party.  I love the community we have here and the friends that have become our family.  Being far away from home is hard.  We don’t get to celebrate as many holidays with our families.  They don’t get to see our kids as often as they’d like, and sometimes I just want to cry because I miss them.  However, I never knew how much my military family would mean to me and how they would become aunts and uncles to our kids.  Instead of being sad because we couldn’t have a BBQ with our parents and siblings, we get to look forward to BBQing with our neighbors and building new relationships with the many families who are in the same boat as us.  I’ve loved our adventure here and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Thanks for reading! Hope you all had an amazing weekend and were able to spend it with the ones you love most.
